Nouveaux dialogues Français-Turcs: A guide on conversation in XIXth century in Turkey

Abstract

The main problem of European and French orientalists has no doubt been the learning and the teaching of oriental languages since the XVIIth century. It has commonly been accepted that the use of Arabic letters was an important barrier which had obstructed the oriental culture. Therefore, many essays have focused on the transposition of Arabic characters into Latin characters. Nouveaux Dialogues Français-Turcs that was composed in 1842 by an Ottoman author, Eram Guzeloglou, is one of these essays and it is a precious instrument for the discovery of history of culture and for linguistics.
