Abstract

Of all the alternative readings presented to the reader and the scholar s/he chooses a single one to deconstruct a literary text. This choice is often molded by certain queries: How to choose a method and how to apply this choice? Thus different points of view are developed in view of the scholar who is to undertake the task, the amount of information/knowledge that is given and many other variables. Should the choice in question be made on the basis of selecting the most objective, or the most scientific approach to the text, or the most subjective, the freest and the most creative approach to the text? Prof. Inal who has always favored the latter approach in his analysis of both Turkish and French poetry continues to implement the empathy method which he founded and applied to poetry in his readings of Baudelaire. As the ardent readers of Frankofoni would know Prof. Inal published the so-called manifesto of the “Empathy Method as a Way of Reading” in the Frankofoni journal in 2006, and in Acta Facultatifs Philosophicae, the official journal of the Slovakia Ostrava University in 2007. In this essay, through excerpts from Fleurs du mal, Spleen de Paris and Mon Coeur mis a nu, Inal investigates with the use of his own poetic and theatrical language within a black frame, Baudelarie’s existentialist position vis- a- vis the devil
