Abstract

Modern poetry starts with A. Bertrand and ripens with Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé and Lautréamont. The Turkish intelligentsia who habitually follow France on the literary path continue to adhere to the same approach for modern poetry. Literary works of the past that are ‘envious’ of the West have often received harsh criticism; and not undeservingly. II. Yeni poetry that emerged in 50’s is no exception. The West that is envied - how well is it understood? How well did poets grasp its meaning? What does it represent in Turkish poetry? These are questions that are also valid for modern poetry. As it looks for answers to these questions, the article also tries to illuminate the aspect of Hilmi Yavuz’s aesthetics of poetry among footholds of modern poetry as an example to the poetry of II. Yeni
