Abstract
In Annie Ernaux’s Une Femme the image of a mother has a very symbolic value. The mother in question takes on the role of father as the father is weak. The author writes her book on the wake of her mother’s death as a form of therapy. The mother-daughter bond is displayed along with its many conflicting facets. Through her writing she tries to hang on to life and her mother. The author is both a narrator and listener. The imagery pertaining to this is analyzed through the approach supported by Gaston Bachelard. He places the images of earth, water, air and fire on top of all the imagery. We are of the opinion that a reading of A. Ernaux’s work through this approach will pro- vide a fresh perspective to the work in question
