Abstract

Mallarmé is well known for having intentionally written hermetics poems, which, since they were published, have never ceased, like enigmas, rebus, to baffle commentators and exegetes who tried to understand as well as explain them. This sonnet “Sur les bois oubliés”, one of the least obscure, would have remained, according to the author’s will, forever misunderstood, if we had not been told to whom it was dedicated and who was speaking; Now that we know the circumstances of his writing, we are able to give an opinion on Mallarmé’s aesthetics, and ask ourselves if he couldn’t have written in a less puzzling, a more natural way
