THE MIRROR’S GAMES IN FANTASTIC STORIES BY ANNE DUGUËL

Abstract

The mirror, as an ordinary object, has always fascinated our ancestors and awakened in them admiration and fear at the same time. Western culture and tradition was strongly influenced by this fascination. As a consequence, the mirror also occupies a very important place in literature. The fantastic genre doesn’t remain indifferent to this rich source of inspiration. Based on the example of stories by Anne Duguëls - contemporary Belgian writer, functions of the mirror in fantasy are presented. The purpose of this paper is to show how these functions are used to develop the ambiguous atmosphere of uncertainty and fear in the genre in question.
