Abstract
Gaëtan Brulotte is an imposing figure in contemporary Quebec literature and already with his first published novel L’Emprise (The Double Exposure) he shows himself to be a great connoisseur of modern man, his urban world and the depths of his soul. Master of words, the novelist speaks decently of human problems condemned by religion and society, and with his style, he reveals to us a new philosophy, haptisme. As stated by Brulotte himself, this neo-philosophy is characterized by the non-mastery of existence and wants to achieve a new vision of the world «by agreeing to take things by their small side.» (Brulotte, 1984:33) Very schematically, two perspectives offer a representation of inter-psychic or co-psychic processes. Only an act of language and a motor of action today offer a realistic substrate process that allows us to partially protect the mental activity of others; similarly, this process allows others to protect our mental activity. Language and action suggest two models of understanding of inter-subjectivity. L’Emprise is a book for connoisseurs of French language, since already the word of the title is complex, meaning at the same time the intellectual or moral rule, the mutual influence of the characters of each other as well as the impact required by narrator on his narratees. Also, it must be added the influence of society, education, religion, prejudices and taboos related to sexuality and its deviations.
