Abstract

This article intends to look at the influence of Orientalism in Baudelaire’s poetry. Even if the poet is not officially recognized as a member of this genre, it is easily noticable that he is under the influence of Orientalist poets and painters such as Gérard de Nerval, Théophile Gautier and Eugène Delacroix. But the image of the Orient portrayed in the works of Orientalists are transformed by Baudelaire. This image is liberated from some clichés and takes on the form of a personal image reflecting Baudelaire’s unique poetic world. This is the subjectification of the Orient. The Oriental woman is no longer a slave, but rather a tyrannic character that weighs upon man. Thanks to her, the Orient is resurrected by taking the form of a work of art and becomes immortal.
