Abstract

In its broadest sense, intertextuality, a method which examines the existence of another text or texts in a new text, is an important method which postmodern literary theory has brought to the field of literary criticism. In fact, every literary text is polyphonic. Substantially, the text is an intersection, a meeting place of the preceding texts; therefore every text follows the impressions of the preceding texts. With the existence of intertextuality, which defends the autonomy of the text of a work, the literary works interact with one another infinitely and they produce new meanings. Thus, text produced before are continuously re-updated and new meanings are deduced, produced and created from them in the context of the new text. Nazan Bekiroğlu has used the philosophy, in İbn-i Haldun’s Muqaddimah that states, are born, grow up and die as well as human beings and the sentence in the work of Muhyiddin-i Arabi called Fusus-ul Hikam: “…Thanks to God, who has given wisdom to hearts of words” as sub-texts while writing her novel, called Between Name and Fire. The author, in her own words the clerk, has created her work dealing with the Ottoman Empire, especially the Janissaries in a mystical manner in an impressive style. In this study, the novel, entitled Between Name and Fire will be studied through the “intertextuality” method, which postmodern literary theory has brought to literary criticism and the novel will be comparatively analyzed through the works, which the author has used as sub-texts and from the perspective of the relations between the Ottoman Sultans and Janissaries.
