Abstract

Today there are many simultaneous re-translations of literary texts which can be defined as translations following the initial translation of a literary work into the target language. The comparative study of re-translations may yield the differing linguistic, ideological norms and translation strategies embraced by different translators. To this end, the first translation and the subsequent re-translations of Jane Austen’s Emma into Turkish have been studied. Nihal Yeğinobalı’s initial and subsequent translation (1963 and 2007), Ayşe Düzkan’s translation (2008) and Elif Yıldırım’s translation (2010) form the corpus of the study. The translations have been compared in terms of language and translation strategies embraced, partitioning of text and presentation, and the use of paratexts.
