Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to reveal the epic life of Somuncu Baba. The method of the study is literature review. As it is known, legends are sources that talk about the life stories of historical and social figures. The first striking features of the legends are that their heroes are real people and the time and place where these people lived are known. However, the legends not only give information about the people discussed, but also contain important clues about the cultural, social, scientific and literary aspects of the period. In this respect, legends are important sources in revealing the life of a historical or mystical personality. Sheikh Hamid-i Veli, who we will discuss in this context and who is known by the nickname Somuncu Baba, is a very important figure for Anatolian Sufism. He significantly influenced the century he lived in and the following centuries in terms of his understanding of Sufism, both with the works he wrote and the students he trained. He exerted this influence by leading some sects established in Anatolia, training caliphs and writing works. Although he did not establish an independent sect, he was the sheikh of Hacı Bayram-ı Veli, the founder of Bayrâmiyye, the first sect established as a Turkish sect. In addition, he can be considered as one of the pioneers of Melamiyye, in that he transferred the well-known Melami characteristic to Bıçakçı Ömer Dede with the line of Hacı Bayram-ı Veli. Somuncu Baba’s life journey can be considered in two ways, apparent and mysterious. His apparent journey began with his birth in Kayseri, first extended to Damascus, then to Erdebil, and then ended with the course of Kayseri, Bursa, Hejaz and Aksaray again. The esoteric journey, on the other hand, was realized as a process of completing the mystical training and navigating leech in the cities mentioned, especially Damascus and Ardebil, in parallel with the outward journey. Although there is limited information in the sources about his aforementioned exoteric and esoteric journey, it can be said that he has reached the present day mostly with anecdotal narratives. On the other hand, it is seen that the legends in the sources that mention him are the same or close to each other, starting from the first source, and in a way they are the repetitions of each other with small differences. However, the tales about him are valuable in that they provide information that enables to understand both his life and his mystical views.
