Abstract
The tradition of women’s day meeting brings together various types of women which we see in various social environments and conditions as a result of the urban environment. This practice, which has been presented to us by being caricatured over certain features in its historical development, includes many folklore creations. At the same time it emerges as an environment which can exhibit the entire transmission of female identity; and where women, stuck between the roles and responsibilities brought by social and cultural codes, can both socialize and present the representations of identity and character traits. It is also possible to encounter various identity characteristics and representations during the women’s day meeting, as women have different character and personality traits. The combination of different identity features in the same environment leads to the diversification of representations. One of the representations of the abovementioned characteristics is undoubtedly the status race. This tradition, in which communication among women is quite intense, inevitably turns into a status show due to some of its structural aspects. Eating-drinking and clothing elements, which are the smaller structural units of the holistic structure we call the women`s day meetings, are especially the best representation areas of this show. A woman known to cook well or pay attention to her dressing will always be attentive to these issues due to status concerns. This care is related to the desire not to lose the image gained or owned and therefore the status, or to gain a certain status. The demand and race for status, which is caused by desires such as money, fame and gaining prestige, is seen as a miniature expression of fame and reputation on the women’s day meetings. In other words, the women’s day meeting, which is a place where the status race between women is both born / created and conveyed, appears as a very useful place for us to see all the representations of this race. This situation points to the cultural functions of the women’s day meetings and therefore to the sustainability of them, instead of having the only feature of being the “gossip environment”. In this article, firstly the concept of the women’s day meeting is explained and after discussing the identity, character and personality of the woman known as as participantof these meetings, the reason why she chooses the structural parts of the status issue, which is built on the characteristics, such as food and beverage, clothing, means of savings, communication, as a representation environment and what kind of functions these environments have in the mentioned representation processes are examined. With this examination, the women’s day meetings environment, in which women can perform their roles and responsibilities related to all features of their identity and character and present them to the other women’s taste, is understood firstly as an expression of the traditional practice itself, and then as a status symbol of the structural units that make up this practice within the historical development of the women’s day meetings. It is concluded that each of these structural parts such as participants, place, eating and drinking, clothing and communication have become a place where women perform many representations in order to gain status or not to lose or reinforce the status they have gained.
