An Historical Investigation on the Concept of Progress

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the historical origins and meaning of the concept of progress. I first try to put forward the theses concerning the meaning and origin of the concept of progress in a historical perspective (begining from the Ancient Greek thoughts, through the Mediavel Christian world, the Modern era, Enlightenment and, up to the XIX. century). Then I reach a conclusion by comparing these theses with etymological analysis of the concept of progress. According to this conclusion, contrary to popular belief , it will be claimed that the concept of progress emerged for the first time in Mediavel Christian world and not in the Modern era.

Bu çalışmanın amacı ilerleme kavramının anlam ve tarihsel kökeniniaraştırmaktır. Bu maksatla öncelikle tarihsel perspektifte (Antik Yunandüşüncesinden başlayarak Ortaçağ Hristiyan Dünyası, Modern dönem,Aydınlanma dönemi ve XIX. yüzyıla kadar olan süreçte) ilerleme kavramınınanlam ve kökenine ilişkin öne sürülen tezler ortaya konulmuştur. Daha sonrabu tezler ilerleme kavramının etimolojik çözümlemesi ile mukayese edilerekbir sonuca varılmıştır. Bu sonuca göre ‘ilerleme’ kavramının sanılanın aksineilk kez modern dönemde değil de, Ortaçağ Hristiyan dünyasında karakterizeolduğu söylenebilir.
