Peripheral nerve and motor point blocks with phenol in the treatment of spasticity

Abstract

Spasticity is a common problem which impedes the rehabilitation program by interfering with the daily living activities. One of the therapeutic options in spasticuy is blockingperipheral nerve or motor points of the spastic muscle by a neumlytic agent, namely phenol. In this study we aimed to evaluate and compare the results of phenol block applications to peripheral nerves and motor points of spastic muscle groups in the lower extremities. Thirtyone peripheral nerve blocks and 34 motor point blocks were performed making a total of'65, in 34 patients. Follow-ups were done up to 2 months periodically by means ofAshworth scale. Nineteen of the patients who received obturator nerve or adductor muscle motor points blocks were followed up by adductor tonus scale and hygiene score as well. Spastisite günlük yaşam aktivitelerini etkileyerek rehabilitasyona engel olan yaygın bir sorundur. Tedavideki seçeneklerden biri spastik kasların pe-riferik sinir ve motor noktalarının nörolitik bir ajan olan fenol ile blokajıdır. Bu çalışmada alt ekstremitelerde spastik te gruplarının tedavisinde uyguladığımız, motor nokta veperiferik sinirlerin fenol ile blok sonuçlarını değerlendirmeyi ve bu iki yöntemi karşılaştırmayı amaçladık. Otuz dört üst motor nöron lezyonlu hastada 31 'iperiferik sinir, 34'ü motor nokta olmak üzere toplam 65 blok uygulandı. Takipler ikinci aya kadar periyodik olarak Ashıvortb skala ile yapıldı.
