Abstract

One of the most fundamental factors on growth and development processes of countries is foreign trade. The advanced level of foreign trade allows both production and consumption levels to increase and can raise social welfare. However, in order for foreign trade to increase social welfare level, it is of great importance to determine exchange rate level at an optimum level. Participation in foreign trade by correctly estimating the demand elasticities of exports and imports may allow for the maximization of trade gains in the long run. In this study, the validity of the Marshall-Lerner Condition and J-Curve Effect is investigated using non-linear ARDL analysis in the period 1992Q1-2019Q4 in Turkish economy. The analysis findings show that in the short term, the sum of trade elasticities is 0.714 and the Marshall-Lerner Condition is not met. However, in the long run, the sum of trade elasticities is estimated as 2.1 and the Marshall-Lerner Condition is met. Analysis findings showing that the increase in foreign exchange rates causes foreign trade deficit in the first six months reveal that foreign trade surplus can be reached beginning from the seventh month. Therefore, the analysis results reflect the validity of J-Curve Effect in the Turkish economy.
