The Foundation, Development and Functional Characteristics of Kemaliye

Abstract
Kemaliye is a small town with population 2922 which is located in the upper Euphrates subregion of East Anatolia region. Kemaliye is a town of Erzincan province and was founded in a narrow and deep valley of Euphrates river in the l0th-llth century. In this study, the location place of Kemaliye town was analyzed and the locational development was investigated. Besides the past and present situations of the town were studied according to the documents belong to both Ottoman and Republican era. We aimed at understanding the reason for development and retrogression in the region by making a comparison to get the differences between the past and present situations of the town.
Özet
Kemaliye, Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi Yukarı Fırat bölümünde yer alan 2922 nüfuslu küçük bir kasabadır. Erzincan iline bağlı bir ilçe merkezi olan Kemaliye; 10-11 yüzyılda Fırat nehrinin derin ve dar vadisi içinde kurulmuştur. Bu çalışmada Kemaliye kasabasının kuruluş yer seçimi analiz edilmiş, eldeki belgeler doğrultusunda alansal gelişimi incelenmiştir. Ayrıca kasabanın geçmiş ve günümüzdeki fonksiyonları Osmanlı ve cumhuriyet dönemine ait belgeler incelenerek hem geçmiş hem de bugünkü durumu karşılaştırılarak ilerleme ve gerileme nedenleri tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır.
