Abstract
The comparison of idioms between languages from a semantic, lexicological andlexicographic perspective, within the scope of contrastive linguistics and phraseological studies, has been arousing an increasing amount of interest. There have been challenges in translatingphrases from a source language to a target language that stem from grammatical differences andcultural interpretations. In this study, phrases derived from the words 'hand' and 'eye' in Turkishand German, and which are also frequently used in both languages, have been analysed bycomparing from a synchronous perspective. In sample sentences taken from literary works, thelevel of equivalence in the translations of phrases has been determined as a first step. Theproblems experienced during translation of phrases when there is partial or no existence ofequivalence, are dealt with examples. With this study, it is emphasized that comparativephraseological studies in Turkish and German might be particularly used in the field oflexicography.
