Values and position of social values in social structure

Abstract

Value is one of the fundamental concepts which is used by philosophy and social sciences. Therefore, there is a wide extend literature about values. One of the social sciences which contribute existing literature about values is sociology. Values are one of the basic concepts that are used for explaining social life in resources of sociology. Thus, at first, definition, stratification, features, functions and resources of values, and then social structure and values, the relationship between culture, foundation, norm, social control and the values are dealed in this article. The aim of this study is to understand the importance and position of values in the social change, in consisting of social structure and in keeping the values alive. Through all analyzes and assessments which are based on literature review, it was understood that the feature of “being social” of human and “social consciousness” can be explained by human nature. Also, it was stated that social structure is consist of culture, values, judgments, foundations and behaviors. In addition, it was made firm that each social structure is under the influence of two different oppressions as one is norms and social control that is aimed to the available and the other is individual differences and expectations that reflect the demand of changing in social structure. Through this study, it was understood that the effects and results of these factors change according to “loyalty level to values” of society. Thus, this article claims that social values have an determiner role in a social structure.

Değer/değerler, felsefenin ve sosyal bilimlerin kullandığı temel kavramlardan biridir. Bundan dolayı, değerler ile ilgili geniş bir literatür mevcuttur. Değerler konusundaki literatürün oluşmasında katkısı olan sosyal bilimlerden biri de sosyolojidir. Sosyoloji kaynaklarında değerler, sosyal hayatı açıklamak için kullanılan temel kavramlardan biridir. Bu tespitten hareketle makalede, önce değerlerin tanımı, sınıflandırılması, özellikleri, işlevleri ve kaynakları daha sonra, toplumsal yapı ve değerler, değerin kültür, kurum, norm ve toplumsal kontrolle ilişkisi ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı, toplumsal yapının oluşmasında, varlığını sürdürmesinde ve sosyal değişimde değerlerin yerini ve önemini saptamaktır. Literatür taraması esas alınarak yapılan analiz ve değerlendirmelerde, toplumsal hayatı mümkün kılan insanın “sosyal olma” özelliği ile “toplumsal bilincin” insan doğasıyla açıklanabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır. Toplumsal hayatın içinde yaşandığı toplumsal yapının ise kültür, değerler, yargılar, kurumlar ve davranışlardan meydana geldiği saptanmıştır. Ayrıca, her toplumsal yapının biri mevcut olanı koruma amacında olan normlar ve toplumsal kontrol, diğeri ise, toplumsal yapıda değişim isteğini yansıtan bireysel farklılıklar ve beklentiler olmak üzere iki farklı baskının etkisi altında olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu faktörlerin etkisinin ve sonuçlarının toplumun “değerlere bağlılık düzeyine” göre değiştiği ortaya konmuştur. Böylece, toplumsal yapıda sosyal değerlerin belirleyici bir rol üstlendiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
