Alternative representatins of women on the cinema: Stepford wives

Abstract

This study is about the concept of gender and its representive forms, which are important in understanding and analyzing the gender roles and inequalities- based on sexuality- in social life. The gender - not in a biological sense, but as an expression of social and cultural aspect- is relevant to the roles, behaviors, attitudes and inequalities that are imposed on men and women. The representation and representation modes of gender as a cultural form in cinema is important. Representation of women in cinema is usually in a paradigm which perpetuates the patriarchal concept and affirms dominant values. There are also films which have alternative representation by demonstrating inequalities critically between men and women; and reversing the roles imposed on them both. In this direction, the film Stepford Wives was resolved with semiotic analysis. In this study, syntactic and paradigmatic analysis techniques were applied.

Bu çalışma toplumsal hayat içerisinde kadın ve erkeğe düşen rolleri ve cinsiyete dayalı eşitsizlikleri anlamak ve analiz etmek için temel bir öneme sahip olan toplumsal cinsiyet kavramı (gender) ve onun temsil biçimleri üzerinedir. Cinsiyetin biyolojik olarak değil, toplumsal ve kültürel olarak oluşturulmasının ifadesi olan toplumsal cinsiyet, kadına ve erkeğe yüklenen rol, davranış, tutum ve eşitsizliklerle ilişkilidir. Toplumsal cinsiyetin sinemada temsili ve temsil biçimleri oldukça önemlidir. Sinemada yer alan kadın temsillerindeki anlayış genellikle ataerkil algılayışı devam ettiren, egemen değerleri olumlayan bir paradigmaya sahiptir. Sinemada kadın erkek eşitsizliklerini eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla ortaya koyan, toplumsal hayatta kadına ve erkeğe yüklenen rolleri ters yüz eden alternatif temsillere sahip filmler de görülmektedir. Bu doğrultuda çalışma kapsamında seçilen Stepford Wives (Stepford Kadınları) filmi, göstergebilimsel analiz ile çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmada göstergebilimsel çözümleme aşamalarından dizimsel ve dizisel çözümleme teknikleri kullanılmıştır.
