Abstract

The term “Presocratic philosophy” is used specifically for philosophers who preceded Socrates such as Thales, Anaximandros, Anaximenes, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, and Democritus. This period is considered to be the first time when philosophers and philosophy emerged, because the thinkers or philosophers mentioned above discussed the problems with a rational reflection and a rational argument, in contrast to the poets like Homer and Hesiod. As Barnes put it, these thinkers, in the way we would call them the first philosophers, produced arguments based on evidence and reason, rather than on the divine and superhuman dogmas and uncontested myths. For this reason, Barnes also sees them as “the first empirical scientists”. Of course, before Barnes, Aristotle makes a similar description of these philosophers, for example he has named Thales as the founder of the philosophy of nature. These philosophers are particularly interested in nature in such a way as to comply with these characterizations. In addition, they make philosophical evaluations in the fields of cosmology, astronomy, geometry, ethics, etc… When we look at the historical investigations of these philosophers, we see that “ethics” is not the subject of a special investigation in the evaluations of historians of philosophy. The main reason for this is that we start the philosophical study of ethics with Socrates and think that presocratic philosophers did not say much about ethics. In the face of this dominant and widespread acceptance, Barnes, Kahn and Laks have been exceptions and the these historians of philosophy made ethics of this period a subject of discussion. The subject of this study will be the place and the possibility of ethics in presocratic philosophers by paying attention to these thinkers.
