Abstract
Socrates, particularly in the Ancient Greek philosophy, is a philosopher who divides history of philosophy as before and after himself; the Presocratics and Socratic schools. Especially Plato, composing his works as being affected by Socrates’ character and his unfair condemnation and making Socrates as the speaking character in most of these works, and Aristoteles as the student of Plato, were the two philosophers who systematized philosophy afterwards. However, the thoughts on philosophy and wisdom of these two philosophers, that were determinative in the western history of philosophy, can not be understood sufficiently without discussing the Pre-socratic philosophers, where these two had already supplied many of the knowledge about the Pre-socratics in their works as well. In this study, the thoughts of the Pre-socratic philosophers about philosophy and wisdom is tried to be grasped, ranging from the Seven Wise Men of Greece, so, the limitations of the article is defined both on the practical and theoratical aspects of philosophy; on ‘ethics’ as in the Aristotelian sense and his conceptualization of philosophy after the influences of Pre-socratics. Consequently, the concepts like self-consciousness, temperance, equanimity, wisdom and fairness in the Pre-socratic philosophers, are seemed as systematized since Aristoteles, coming from the Pre-socratics up to him. In this context, here, the concepts of sophia and philosophia will be tried to be reinterpreted if they were in a path of transformation in the period between Plato and Aristotle and seven wise men, hence by the philosophers who are read as Pre-socratics today.
