Abstract
This paper will claim that in certain respects Protagoras and other sophists can be considered as precursors of democratic theory and it will try to undergird this claim with two main arguments. First is that Protagoras adopted a non-substantive approach for determining ethical and political principles; the second is that he adopted a coherence theory of truth rather than a correspondence theory. Within this context, another central argument to be presented to support this claim is that, in Ancient Greece the transition from mythos to logos witnessed the emergence of two rival conceptions of logos. One conception was Protagoras’ human-centered view, while the other was Plato’s cosmos-centered view. The former conception provided favorable conditions to democratic theory, but the latter one led to an anti-democratic attitude as depicted by Plato’s Republic. The difference between both the substantive and non-substantive interpretations of logos and the one between representational and coherence theory of truth are tried to be related to the contemporary democratic theory with reference to Jürgen Habermas, who is one of the most prominent philosophers of the 20th century. Apart from these, after highlighting the emphasis of sophists on the importance of ‘persuasion’, the paper will lastly present a discussion concerning the different uses of persuasion.
