Abstract

Jacques Derrida undertakes an extensive reading of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Of Grammatology. In this article, we try to work throughthis encounter in terms of Rousseau’s theory of music. The original ‘song’ (chant), which appears in Rousseau’s thought as the privileged figure of the subject’s self-presence within feeling, has a model value. According to Rousseau, there is a strong connection between music and language. There is no music before language. He presupposes the original unity of speech and song. The suitability of languages to music, on the other hand,is measured by their proximity to passional origin. Derrida discusses Rousseau’s theory ofmusic throughthequasi-conceptofthesupplementandfocusesonthe mouvement of the chains of supplements, which, according to Rousseau, leads to the gradual degeneration of music. The relationship between music and mimesis is also discussed in this framework. The strange position of the origin of music(a positionbetween nature and culture)is thus revealed. Disclosing the difference between what Rousseau wishes to say and what he describesrevealsadreamoforiginalongwiththecontradictionsit generates. This disclosurealso shakes the ground of Rousseau’stheory that privileged melody over harmony. Rousseau presupposes the existence of a pureorigin. NeverthelessDerridaexposesRousseau cannotavoid describing the necessity of the supplement (which we would prefer to call the writing principle in this context)and cannot describe the origin as a plenitude, as a self-presence and as a pure present. Instead,Rousseau’s text describes origin as the beginning of the end. With this description of necessity by Rousseau, an indispensable quasi-concept of Derrida’s thought is also revealed.
