Abstract

Bruno Latour holds that in the age of environmental disasters in which we live, or in his words in the New Climatic Regime, the relations between science, technology, philosophy and politics should be reconsidered according to the reactions of Earth to our human actions. Latourian political ecology, which is quite different from classical environmentalism, has a peculiar set of concepts. This article examines its most important innovations and problematizations. The first section elaborates Latour’s understanding of “political ecology” and highlights its differences from previous ecological approaches. It analyzes Latour’s problematization of the concept of “Nature” and the distinction he makes between Science (with capital S) and sciences in plural (or the scientific production). In his recent ecological philosophy, Latour has adopted James Lovelock’s “Gaia hypothesis” and has developed it further as a philosophical concept. For a better understanding of Latour’s appropriation, the second section is fully devoted to Lovelock’s “Gaia hypothesis”. Finally, the third section focuses on Latour’s own concept of Gaia. It discusses, together with its ecological implications, the concept of “distributional agency”, which does not distinguish between human and nonhuman in terms of agency, and which Latour called “actor-network-theory” in his previous studies on the sociology of science. It also explores how Latour applies his understanding of distributional agency to Gaia theory.
