THE FOLDING OF STRUCTURES AND THE RULE OF MODALITIES

Abstract

Adrien Doerig, Aaron Schurger, Kathryn Hess and Michael H. Herzog have stated a strong criticism of causal structure theories of consciousness. Their unfolding argument aims to show that causal structure theories’ reliance on an isomorphism between phenomenal structures on the one hand and physical ones on the other is misplaced. In this paper, I show that the unfolding argument is old wine in new bottles. I argue that the Newman objection (in the context of the philosophy of science) and the triviality problem (which targets theories of mental representation) anticipate the unfolding argument. I review the relevant literature and show how both preceding objections have been dissolved on by invoking modalities and counterfactual in their statement of scientific structures or representational structures. Finally, I apply the same strategy to deal with the unfolding problem. I show that using modal structures (characterized in terms of counterfactual conditionals) helps to deal with the unfolding argument.

Adrien Doerig, Aaron Schurger, Kathryn Hess ve Michael H. Herzog, bilincin nedensel yapı teorilerine güçlü bir eleştiri getirmiştir. Onların serimleme argümanları, fenomenal yapılar ile fiziksel olanlar arasındaki eşbiçimliliğe dayanan nedensel yapı teorilerinin yanlışlığını göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu makalede, serimleme argümanın aslında eski bir eleştirinin yeni bir şekilde dillendirilmiş hâli olduğunu göstermeye çalışıyorum. Newman itirazının (bilim felsefesi bağlamında) ve sıradanlık probleminin (zihinsel temsil teorilerini hedef alış şekliyle) serimleme argümanını öncelediğini ileri sürüyorum. Konuyla ilgili literatürü inceleyerek, bu iki öncül itirazın, bilimsel yapılar veya temsili yapılara ilişkin açıklamalarında modalitelere ve karşı-olgusallığa başvurarak aslında nasıl geçerliliklerini yitirdiğini gösteriyorum. Son olarak, aynı stratejiyi ben de serimleme argümanı ile uğraşırken kullanıyorum. Böylece (karşı-olgusal koşulluluklar ile bağlantılı olarak tanımlanan) modal yapıların serimleme argümanının üstesinden gelmeye nasıl yardımcı olduğunu göstermeye çalışıyorum.
