Abstract

Various theories regarding the laws of nature are based on the acceptance or rejection of David Hume's views on causality and regularity. We may speak of two main views that center the categorical or dispositional properties of objects: According to the categorical view, laws are not based on the essence of properties, but rather are defined as metaphysical contingent relations between categorical properties. These relations, according to David Lewis, are defined as regularity in which the F in the form of R (F, G) is regularly followed by G. Besides for David Armstrong laws are a special second-order N (F, G) relation of the nomic necessity found among universals. Another dominant view is the dispositional essentialism theories, which argue that laws are determined by the dispositional properties possessed by objects and that the laws of nature are metaphysically necessary. Many essentialist theories, which differ from each other, provide different explanations regarding both the laws of nature and the properties of objects in the last decades. In the last decades, many essentialist theories, which differ from each other, provide different explanations regarding both the laws of nature and the properties of objects. In this paper, our aim will be to examine the arguments of scientific essentialism proposed by Brian Ellis based on the meaning he attributes to dispositions in comparison with the theories of regularity and nomic necessity, specific to laws of nature, and we will discuss what kind of innovations scientific essentialism offers compared to other theories.
