Abstract

To think that God has a quiddity is to admit that he has some essential/necessary properties. The main opponent view to this "divine quiddity" assertion is what is called "divine simplicity" thesis. According to this thesis, ascribing a "quiddity" to God and signify him with related properties should be rejected. Since this goes against the idea that God is a necessary, causless and asiety being. In this article both approachas will be evaluated and compared with reference to the views of the philosophers/theologians such as Farabi, İbn Sina, Aquinas, Gazali and contemporary thinkers like A. Plantinga, B. Leftow and R. Swinburne. The "divine quiddity" thesis will be advocated for two reasons. Firstly, God's having a quiddity is a precondition for mentioning about his existence and the nature of this existence. Secondly, "divine quiddity" view can be advocated together with the idea that God is necessary, causless being.
