An outstanding lady philosopher of republican period: Semiha Cemal

Abstract

Semiha Cemal, one of the first female philosophers of the Republic, was born inl905 and died inl936. She wrote philosophical-literary books and made translations. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy, University of Istanbul (Darülfünun) in 1926, she studied for a while as an assistant of Mustafa Şekip Tunç and later taught psychology and philosophy in high schools. She made translations from Plato, Epiktetos, and Marcus Aurelius and published them with her own prefaces. Her translations of Plato made important contributions in terms of both being preliminaries and developing a language of philosophy in Turkey. Her works have not been analyzed from a philosophical perspective till now. Being a mystic at the same time, Semiha Cemal is one of the symbols and shapers of a civilization in which the Turkic and Islamic ethical and esthetical values were established, perceived and transmitted from generation to generation. In this paper, Semiha Cemal's works and life of thought will be discussed in order to understand and evaluate our own civilization as a preliminary step.

Özet

Cumhuriyetin ilk kadın felsefecilerinden olan Semiha Cemal Hanım, 1905'te doğmuş ve 1936'da vefat etmiştir. Telif edebî-felsefî eserleri ve tercümeleri vardır. 1926'da Darülfîinûn'un Felsefe şubesinden mezun olmuş, burada Mustafa Şekıp Tunç'un asistanı olarak bir süre çalışmış ve daha sonra liselerde felsefe ve ruhiyat öğretmenliği yapmıştır. Platon, Epiktetos ve Mark Orel'den tercümeler yapmış ve bunları kendisinin kaleme aldığı ön sözler ile yayınlamıştır. Platon tercümeleri, hem ilk olmaları hem de Türkiye'de bir felsefe dilinin gelişmesi bakımından önemli bir katkıdır. Semiha Cemal'in eserleri bugüne dek bir felsefeci gözü ile incelenmemiştir. Aynı zamanda bir mutasavvıf olan Semiha Cemal, Türk'e ve İslâmiyet'e ait etik ve estetik değerlerin inşa edildiği, idrak edildiği ve nesilden nesile aktarıldığı bir medeniyetin oluşturucularından ve sembollerinden biridir. Bu makalede, kendi medeniyetimizi anlayabilmek ve anlamlandı-rabilmek için küçük bir adım olarak, Semiha Cemal'in eserleri ve düşünce hayatı incelenmeye çalışılacaktır.
