Abstract
Ancient Stoic philosopher Seneca (d. 65) and first Islamic philosopher Kindi (d. 873), who come together with the definition Human is an intelligent and mortal existence , are the main philosophers of this study. Both philosophers made important observation in the context of God-world-human relationships and developed a human philosophy, which also involves morals. Since the Stoics see the universe as macro cosmos and the human as micro cosmos, they accept that a human, who lives naturally, becomes happy. Seneca continues on this opinion and desires mind, which he sees as the first condition to be a human, to be used on course of the philosophy and proper to the nature. Therefore, to make an effort for wisdom and comply with the order of nature underlies the human concept. Kindi, who carries the traces of Stoic moral, draws attention to nafs, intelligence and sense of human powers, whom he sees as a particle of the nature. Like Seneca he explains that the human can reach virtues by going towards the fear of death instead of running from it, and studies how the human can be happy by trying the alternatives on overcoming the sadness. In this study, it has been aimed to point out the approaches of both philosophers to the human philosophy within the frame of their differences and common grounds and to determine whether there is an interaction between them or not.
