An Unknown Work of Mehmet Izzet: Philosophy Lessons First Book Ilm-I Ruh of Madrasah Aliyya

Mehmet İzzet’in Bilinmeyen Bir Eseri: Medrese-i Aliyye Felsefe Dersleri Birinci Kitab İlm-İ Ruh

Abstract

Mehmet Izzet (d.1930) is one of the pioneers of modern Turkish philosophy. After gradua-ting from Galatasaray High School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law, before he graduated, he was sent to France to the Sorbon University for education. Before joining the univer-sity, he worked as Hilal-ı Ahmer clerk and as a philosophy teacher at Dârulhilâfetilaliyye Madrasah. He gave philosophy lectures in there, and he taught Ilm-i Ruh as an introduc-tion to philosophy. But Ilm-i Ruh is not mentioned in the biographies written about him. Revealing and evaluating this work, which we think as very important, will contribute to Turkish Thought. For this reason, our article focuses on his philosophy teaching in Dâ-rulhilafetilaliyye Madrasah and his unknown work İlm-i Ruh. Mehmet İzzet taught İlm-I Ruh as the first book of Philosophy Lessons in Dârulhilâfetilaliyye Madrasa. We came across this work as a happy coincidence during our readings on Turkish philosophy of the Constitutional Era. The work constitutes the introduction to philosophy which he teaches in his philosophy lectures, in other words the first one of the four philosophical discipli-nes of the period,. As far as we know, this work has not been mentioned among published or unpublished works in any academic circle.

Özet

Mehmet İzzet (ö.1930) modern Türk felsefesinin öncü isimlerinden birisidir. Galatasaray Lisesinden mezun olduktan sonra Hukuk Fakültesine kaydolmuş, mezun olmadan Fran-sa’ya Sorbon Darulfünunu’na eğitim için gönderilmiştir. Üniversiteye intisab etmeden önce Hilal-ı Ahmer kâtipliği ve Dârulhilâfetilaliyye Medresesi felsefe müderrisliği yapmış, burada felsefe dersleri vermiş, verdiği bu derslerde felsefeye giriş dersi olarak İlm-i Ruh’u okutmuştur. Fakat İlm-i Ruh adlı eseri, hakkında yazılan biyografilerde belirtilmemekte-dir. Oldukça önemli olduğunu düşündüğümüz bu eserin ortaya çıkarılması ve değerlen-dirilmesi Türk Düşüncesi’ne katkı sağlayacaktır. Bu nedenle çalışmamız, Dârulhilâfetila-liyye Medresesi’ndeki felsefe müderrisliğine ve onun bilinmeyen eseri İlm-i Ruh üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Mehmet İzzet İlm-i Ruh’u in Dârulhilâfetilaliyye Medresesinde verdiği Felsefe Dersleri’nde birinci kitab olarak okuttu. Bu çalışmaya Meşrutiyet dönemi Türk fel-sefesi üzerine yaptığımız okumalarımız sırasında mutlu bir tesadüf sonucu rastladık. Eser, yazarın felsefe derslerinde okuttuğu ‘felsefeye giriş’i, diğer adıyla dönemin dört felsefe di-siplininden ilkini oluşturmaktadır. Bildiğimiz kadarıyla bu eserden bugüne kadar herhangi bir akademik ortamda, yayınlanmış veya yayınlanmamış eserler arasında söz edilmemiştir.
