Abstract
Musicologist Louis Albert Bourgault-Ducoudray (1840-1910), a music history teacher at the Paris Conservatory, was commissioned by the French government to do research in 1875, and during his tenure he conducted research on music in cities such as Istanbul, Izmir and Athens. He published the information and compilations he obtained from his research under the title "Trente Melodies Populaires de Grece et D'orient / 30 Popular Melodies from Greece and the Orient" in Paris in 1877. In this article, firstly the aforementioned book is examined. According to this examination, it is seen that Bourgault-Ducoudray explained the scales of folk songs with tetrachords and pentachords, based on the Ancient Greek modes, and also did the polyphony of the works he compiled. In the first part of the book, which consists of two parts, Bourgault-Ducoudray primarily dealt with the Ancient Greek modes and explained their relations with the Eastern Chromaticism and hybrid scales. In the second part of his book, he included the notes of thirty piano-accompanied vocal works, most of which are understood to have been compiled from Izmir (Smyrne). In the second part of Bourgault-Ducoudray's book, it is seen that he did the polyphony of thirty folk songs for vocal and piano that he compiled during his time in Athens, Megara, İstanbul and İzmir. The aim of this study is to examine the Eastern chromatic of Bourgault-Ducoudray's work and the chords used in the polyphony of the works composed in the Eastern chromatic. In the study, content analysis method, is one of the qualitative research techniques, was used during the examination of the aforementioned book. A literature review was conducted to determine the makam and the harmony used; the makams were analyzed according to the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek system, and the chords were analyzed according to the tonal harmony and fourth based harmony systems. The data obtained were interpreted by presenting them as note scales and pictures. As a result of the study, it has been determined that there are five works that fit the definition of Eastern chromatic, four (4) works are similar to the hicaz makam and one (1) piece is similar to the nikriz makam scale. In the harmonic analysis of polyphonic works for the piano and vocal, it has been observed that chords that fit the triplet and sometimes the tonal harmony and fourth based harmony systems are used, but they are not used in a systematic harmony.
