Abstract

Background/Problem Statement: Students’ transition from concrete to formal rea- soning abilities can differ from one society to another, even from one region to another in the same culture and also students in the same classroom. In this process, instructional programs, classroom activities, laboratory activities, teaching materials, measurement-assessment methods, education of the teacher influence students’ cognitive development levels. At the same time, students’ family literacies, physical and social environment, extra-curriculum activities can also affect students’ cognitive development levels. Purpose/Objective/Focus of Study: The aim of the study is to determine how mid- dle school students’ socio-economical profiles (family literacies, gender, social environment and supported learning environment) influence their cognitive development levels. Method: Case study was used as the methodology of the study. Science Cogni- tive Development Test (SCDT) played a key role to gather data. The subjects were 445 seventh-to-eighth-grade students at middle schools in five cities in Turkey. The participating students were randomly selected from different class- rooms of these schools. SPSS statistical package programme was used while analyzing the date that obtained from the SCDT. Findings and Conclusions: While significant relationship was not found between students’ cognitive development levels and their genders, a significant relation- ship was found with their family literacy. Nevertheless, the students’ supported environment and social environment have also positive influence on students’ cognitive development levels. Recommendations: It is clear that rich and concrete experiences motivate students to visualize scientific concepts and also enable them to use their cognitive abili- ties more effectively. Also, the students’ socializations become more effective when school subjects support them with daily experiences.
