Abstract
Problem Statement: Teacher candidates accepted to the 67 Faculties of Education all over Turkey come from various high schools including Anatolian teacher training high schools, early childhood education departments of vocational high schools for girls, general high schools, Anatolian high schools, super high schools, and science schools. It is noteworthy that graduates of teacher training high schools are granted extra points in the university selection and placement examination and that they are awarded scholar- ships by MONE if they choose teacher education departments of Faculties of Education. However, there is not enough evidence indicating that teacher candidates coming from these schools form a more qualified source for Faculties of Education and that they sig- nificantly outperform teacher candidates from other sources. Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate whether teacher candidates' general grade point average (GPA), their achievement in profession related courses, and their performance on the KPSS exam in relation to specific high schools they graduated from. Research Questions: This study aimed to answer the following two questions: 1. Do graduates of elementary education programs significantly differ in their general grade point average (GPA), achievement in profession related courses, and their per- formance on the KPSS exam and their appointment to teaching jobs in relation to spe- cific high schools they graduated from? 2. What are reasons of such significant difference in elementary education program gradu- ates' general grade point average (GPA), achievement in profession related courses, and their performance on the KPSS exam and their appointment to teaching jobs? Methods: Causal-comperative research method was used in this study. The study group in- volved 2004, 2005, and 2006 graduates of the Elementary Education Department in the Fac- ulty of Education of Hacettepe University. The participants were 1107 graduates of depart- ments of elementary education, elementary science education, elementary mathematics edu- cation, early childhood education and they graduated from 5 different high school types - general high schools, Anatolian high schools, super high schools, Anatolian teacher training schools, and early childhood education departments of vocational high schools for girls. One way ANOVA and chi-square test were used to analyze data. In order to find out reasons for significant differences in relation to high school types, a focus group interview was con- ducted. Qualitative data collected through focus group interview and surveys were classi- fied under predetermined categories, and frequencies and percentages were drawn to de- scribe the data, and quotations from participants were reported to draw attention to critical points. Findings and Conclusions: In general, it was found that the type of high school graduated made a significant difference in the participants' GPAs, F(4,1102)=27.83, p
