Balıkesir and Türkistan Earthquakes and Reproach to Tevfik Fikret

Abstract

Turkish intellectuals living before the Republican Period were not so much interested in the events and earthquake disasters out of İstanbul. Therefore, the poem of Tevfik Fikret called “Verin Zavallılara” is quite important for the history of Turkish Literature. Fikret wrote this poem on the earthquake took place in Balıkesir in 1898. This poem roused great repercussions in public opinion. On the other hand, although some people wanted him to write a poem on the earthquake took place in Türkistan in 1910, he did not write and remained to this event insensitive. As a result, it can be said that the interest of Fikret on the earthquake disasters is temporary.

Özet

Cumhuriyet döneminden önce Türk aydınları, İstanbul dışında yaşanan hadiselere/felâketlere çok fazla ilgi göstermemişlerdir. Bu nedenle Tevfik Fikret’in, 1898 yılında Balıkesir’de yaşanan deprem için, “Verin Zavallılara” isimli şiirini yazması ve bu şiirin kamuouyunda büyük bir yankı uyandırması edebiyat tarihimiz açısından önemlidir. Fakat aynı şairin, kendisinden ısrarla istenmesine rağmen, 1910 yılında Türkistan’da vuku bulan deprem için bir şiir yazmaması ve konuya ısrarla duyarsız kalması, bizde, önceki dikkatinin geçici olduğu izlenimini uyandırmaktadır.
