Abstract

Bodrum Peninsula is one of the most important tourism centers of Turkey. Due to the excessive growing rate, of foreign and domestic tourism, the population is increasing rapidly in the region. The Bodmm Peninsula suffers from serious water shortage due to the overwhelmed population growth and the insufficient water resources in the region. In recent years, this shortage has reached to intolerable levels due to the increasing the touristic value of the area especially in the summer months. Bodrum Peninsula does not have safe and sustainable water resources which can provide its water supply needs. In addition, the water resources which can supply the water needs are locatedfar from the region. In this paper, the domestic water problem, which has become an excessively important issue in the Bodrum Peninsula due to the increase in population of tourism, has been examined and its significance is emphasized. In the paper, it is determined that the peninsula suffers from domestic water shortage and the water needs can not be met from the mailable resources in the summer months. The population estimations of the region (according io both the domestic population and the tourist popidation) are carried out until the year 2100 and the domestic water needs are determined according to these projections. If the increasing population can not be controlled, the water needs will be 32.64x106, 52.33x10°, 70.11 xlO6 and 312.23x10° m3/vear in the years 2025, 2040, 2050 and 2100, respectively. Hence, it will be more suitable economically to supply the water needs of the Bodrum Peninsula in the short and medium terms from the water resources located near Milas. The longer term water needs, on the other hand, are suggested to be supplied from the Dalaman-Akköprü Dam and the Namnam Creek
