The Relationships Between Supervisors' Communication Styles and Employees' Perceptions of Job Satisfaction, Performance and Role Ambiguity

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between supervisors’ communication styles and employees’ perceptions of job satisfaction, performance and role ambiguity in the service industry. Data were gathered from a total of 80 employees who work for 3 market chains. After data analysis, it was seen that bidirectional communication was positively correlated with job satisfaction and job performance, and negatively correlated with all the dimensions of role ambiguity. It was found that indirect communication was negatively associated with role ambiguity regarding customers and supervisor. It was realized that job performance and job satisfaction of employees were negatively correlated with all the dimensions of role ambiguity. Recommendations were presented regarding how supervisors can communicate effectively with their employees.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, hizmet sektöründeki yöneticilerin iletişim tarzı ile çalışanların iş tatmini, iş performansı ve rol belirsizliği algıları arasındaki ilişkileri incelemektir. Üç market zincirinde çalışan toplam 80 çalışandan anket aracılığıyla veri toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizi sonucunda, iki yönlü iletişimin iş tatmini ve performansıyla pozitif, bu çalışmada ele alınan tüm belirsizlik boyutları ile negatif ilişkili olduğu görülmüştür. Dolaylı iletişim ise müşterilere ve üste ilişkin belirsizlikle negatif ilişkili bulunmuştur. Çalışanın iş performansının ve iş tatmininin ise rol belirsizliğinin tüm alt boyutlarıyla negatif ilişkili olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Bulgular doğrultusunda yöneticilerin astlarıyla nasıl etkili iletişim kurabileceği konusunda öneriler getirilmiştir.
