The 1915 incidents, social memory and documentary cinema

Abstract

It’s neccessary not to think of the memory of individuals separated from the community. Every single individual of the society is just like the model of the society. Today, oral, written and visual culture components are often used for the social memory’s building, protecting and transferring. The ones who claim the 1915 incidents as “genocide” are used the oral, written and visual culture components with the aim of propaganda to make a specific social memory. Especially the propaganda works by the documentary films as visual culture compenent are accepted as truth because of “the document fact of documentaries”. It’s possible to show the documentary named “Armenia: The Betrayed” as example of the propaganda works to make a specific social memory.

Bireylerin belleğini toplumdan ayrı düşünmemek gerekir. Toplumun üyesi olan her birey toplumun birer örneği gibidir. Günümüzde toplumsal belleğin oluşumunda, korunmasında ve belleğin aktarılmasında sözlü, yazılı ve görsel kültür ürünleri oldukça yoğun bir şekilde kullanılmaktadır. 1915 olaylarının “soykırım” olduğunu iddia eden çevreler de belirli bir toplumsal bellek oluşturmak için bu sözlü, yazılı ve görsel kültür ürünlerini propaganda amacıyla kullanmaktadır. Özellikle görsel kültür ürünü olarak belgesel film aracılığı ile yapılan propagandalar “belgeselin belge niteliği taşıması” nedeniyle gerçek kabul edilebilmektedir. “Armenia: The Betrayed” adlı “belgesel” film çalışması ise belirli bir toplumsal bellek oluşturmak için yapılmış propaganda çalışmalarına örnek gösterilebilir.
