Abstract
With the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), Russia claimed the province of Kars and the surrounding areas. When the Russian army retreated from Anatolia in the aftermath of the October Revolution in 1917, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed on 3 March 1918. According to this treaty, Kars remained under Ottoman control. The residents living in the province hoped that the attacks by Armenian militant groups would come to an end with the Treaty of BrestLitovsk. However, the plunder and attacks by the Armenian resurged following the Armistice of Mudros signed as a result of the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. During the attacks in the province of Kars and the surroundings, several villages were destroyed and the properties of the residents were seized. The seizure of residents’ property by Armenian militant groups continued until the military operation in the Eastern Front of the Turkish War of Independence. As a result of the forward operation of the Turkish army, the Treaty of Alexandropol was signed on 2 December 1920 which gave an end to the plunder and attacks made by the Armenian. In this study, the amount of the property seized by the Armenians in the province of Kars and the surroundings is examined. In order to shed light on the subject, archive documents and written resources were used.
Özet
1877-1878 Osmanlı Rus Savaşı’nda Osmanlı Devletinin yenilmesiyle Kars ve çevresi Rus hakimiyetine geçti. 1917 Ekim ihtilaliyle Rus birliklerinin Anadolu’dan geri çekilmesiyle 3 Mart 1918 Brest Litowsk Antlaşması imzalandı. Anlaşmaya göre Elviye-i Selâse kapsamında Kars Osmanlı Devletine bırakıldı. Bölge halkı Brest Litowsk Antlaşması’yla Ermenilerin daha önce yaptıkları saldırıların son bulacağı umudunu taşımışlardır. Fakat Osmanlı Devletinin I. Dünya Savaşından yenik çıkmasıyla imzalanan Mondros Mütarekesinin akabinde bölgede Ermeni yağma hareketleri ve saldırıları tekrar başladı.
