Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the clinical, bacteriological and virological aspects of the infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis and to determine the therapeutic effects of florfenicol and cefuroxime sodium in dairy cattle. Blephoarospasm, epiphora, corneal opasite and conjunctivitis were observed in 27 of 450 (6 %) clinically examined-animals. Moraxella bovis, Escherichia coli, Proteus spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from the conjunctival swabs collected from infected animals. Bovine Herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) was determined in the serum of 3 (11.1 %) infected cattle by microneutralization test. Infected animals were divided into three equal groups as control and treatment to determine the efficacy of the florfenicol and cefuroxime sodium. Florfenicol and cefuroxime sodium were given subconjuctivally 3 times with 48 hour intervals to the animals in experiment groups. Therapeutic effectiveness of florfenicol and cefuroxime sodium was found as 78 % and 67 % by cultural examination respectively. In conclusion, M. bovis was isolated as the primary causative agent of keratoconjunctivitis infection in dairy cattle. It was determined that subconjuctival florfenicol administration was more effective than cefuroxime sodium in the keratoconjunctivitis treatment.
