Abstract

Listeria monocytogenes is a common cause of infection in immunocompromised patients. A thirty-eight-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital because of dysarthria and clouding of consciousness. The patient was a renal recipient and recieving immunosuppres-sive therapy. The diagnosis of meningoencephali¬tis was made clinically and correlated by cerebrospinal fluid findings. Gram positive bacilli were isolated from cerebrospinal fluid culture. This bacterium identified as Listeria monocytogenes by standard laboratory methods. Despite an appropriate antimicrobial therapy the patient died at the fourth day of hospitalization.
