Abstract

Behçet's Disease (BD) is a multisystem disorder characterized by different organ mani¬festations. Although the etiology ofBD is still not clear, a variety of mechanisms have recently been reported including abnormalities related to T lymphocytes or activated T lympocytes which contribute to the pathogenesis of BD. Since we considered that adenosine deaminose (ADA) may reflect T cell activation in BD, in the present study, we measured plasma ADA activity in male patients (n: 20; mean age: 28.6 7.81 years) in or¬der to investigate the presence of T lymphocyte activation. Twenty male healthy volunteers (mean age: 32.8 6.75 years) constituted the control gro¬up. Plasma ADA activity was found to be higher in patients with BD (24.30 5.6 U/L) than that of the controls (16.81 3.17 U/L) (p < 0.001). In conclusion, it may be suggested that T lymphocyte activation may play an important role in the pat¬hogenesis of BD and the validity of this suggesti¬on requires further investigations.
