Porgnostic importance of proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunoreactivity and mitotic index in malignant mesothelioma

Abstract

Aim: In this study, proliferating nuclear cell antigen (PCNA) immunoreactivity and the mitotix index were searched in human malignant mesothelioma to assess their prognostic value. Material and Methods: PCNA immunoreactivity was investigated in 19 cases. The authors also compared this with mitosis counts. Results: There was no correlation between the percentage of PCNA immunoreactive cells and their mitotic counts. However, the median survival was 16.4 months for patients with less than 25% PCNA immunoreactive cells, 17.8 months for patients with less than 4 mitotic figures 10 high power fields of tumoral tissue, 10.8 months for patients with more than 25 per cent PCNA immunoreactive cells, and 14.2 months for patients with more than 4 mitotic figures in 10 high power fields of tumoral tissue. Conclusion: Our results suggest that PCNA immunoreactivity and mitotic count may have prognostic values in malignant mesothelioma.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmada malign mezotelyoma'da proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)'in ve mitotik indeksin prognoz üzerine etkisinin araştırılması amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmamızda PCNA immünreaktivitesi 19 olguda incelendi. Ayrıca, tümöral doku içerisindeki mitoz sayısı kaydedildi. Bulgular: PCNA immünreaktivitesi ile mitoz sayısı arasında herhangi bir ilişki bulunamadı. Bununla birlikte PCNA immünreaktivitesi %25 ' den az olan grupta ortalama sağ kalım 16.4 ay, tümöral doku içinde 10 büyük büyütme sahasında 4 'den az mitoz içerenlerde 17.8 ay olarak bulunurken, PCNA immünreaktivitesi %25 ' den fazla olan grupta ortalama sağ kalım 10.8 ay, tümöral doku içinde 10 büyük büyütme sahasında 4'den fazla mitoz içerenlerde 14.2 ay olarak bulundu. Sonuç: Bu sonuçlar PCNA immünreaktivitesinin ve mitoz sayısının malign mezotelyomanın prognozunu belirlemede kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir.
