Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing, and it is the leading cause of acquired limb amputation, renal failure, and blindness due to diabetic microangiopathy and/or macroangiopathy. Recently, has it been shown that intensive glycemic control may stop or decrease the development of diabetic complications and the diabetic patients' education has been proposed as a sine quo none for the successful therapy. We evaluated the results of 62 diabetic patients who were educated about diabetes at our endocrinology department. The patients were given 2 tests consisting of 33 questions on diabetes and the topics of education program covering their knowledge about diabetes, diabetic complications, physical exercise, foot care, self-glucose-monitoring etc before the course and after the course (3-6 months later). At the end of the education program; all patients learned daily foot care, 40% of them had been doing self-glucose-monitoring, and 66% had been doing physical exercise. Their answers to test questions were approximately two times higher than their pre-course test results
