Screening of the population aged over 40 years for obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus in Yavuzeli, a town of Gaziantep city

Abstract

The aim of the study was to screen the population aged older than 40 years for obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus in Yavuzeli, a town of Gaziantep City. Subjects were invited for screening and 148 subjects admitted to the single medical centre of the town. Participants were classified according to body mass index (BMI) (BMI 40 morbid obese). Hypertension was defined as a blood pressure >140/90 mmHg. Using capillary blood a fasting blood glucose 140 mg/dL and postprandial blood glucose >200 mg/dL were considered diabetes. Other results for blood glucose were not evaluated due to unavailability of oral glucose tolerance test. Therefore 107 subjects were evaluated for diabetes mellitus. The overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 25,2 % (20,6% known diabetics and 4,7% newly diagnosed diabetics). Prevalence of hypertension was 34,5% (28,4% known and 6,1% newly diagnosed hypertensives). BMI of 40(27,0%) participants were normal, 61 (41,2%) were overweight, 44(29,7%) were obese and 3(2,0%) were morbid obese. Çalışmamızda Gaziantep İli Yavuzeli İlçesi'nde 40 yaş üzeri nüfusun obezite, hipertansiyon ve diabetes mellitus açısından taranması amaçlandı. Yapılan çağrı sonucu ilçede bulunan tek sağlık ocağına 148 kişi başvurdu. Kişiler vücut kitle indeksine (VKİ) göre sınıflandırıldı (VKİ 40 morbid obez). Kan basıncı >140/90 mmHg olanlar hipertansif kabul edildi. Kapiller kanda bakılan kan şekeri 140 mg/dL ve tokluk kan şekeri >200 mg/dL bulunanlar diabetik kabul edildi. Oral glukoz tolerans testi yapılamadığından diğer sonuçlar değerlendirmeye alınmadı. Böylece diabet taraması için 107 kişi değerlendirildi. DM sıklığı; eski diabetikler %20,6, yeni tanı konanlar %4,7 olmak üzere %25,2 bulundu. HT sıklığı; bilinen %28,4, yeni tesbit edilen %6,1 olmak üzere %34,5 idi.
