Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate lipid peroxidation, zinc and magnesium concentrations in plasma of essential hypertensive patients. The levels of lipid peroxidation, measured as thiobarbituric-acid reactive substance (TBARS), zinc and magnesium were measured in plasma of 30 patients with hypertension and in 27 normotensive controls. The concentration of plasma TBARS was measured by a thiobarbituric acid test. The levels of TBARS in plasma of patients were significantly higher than in the normotensive control group. There were no significant differences in plasma zinc and magnesium between these groups. Increased oxidative stress may contribute to endothelial dysfunction in hypertensive patients, so that free radicals seem likely to play a role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension.
