The prervalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance in obese persons

Abstract

Prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is seen at least two times more among obese patients than nonobese ones. In this study we researched the frequency of type 2 DM and impaired glucose tolerance in ones who have Body Mass Index (BMI) of more and less than 27 Kg/m2. 470 persons having BMI of more than 27 Kg/m2 (170 males, 300 females mean age of 46(11 years) and 440 persons having BMI of less than 27 Kg/m2 (200 males, 240 females, mean age of 45(14 years) were involved in this study. Oral glucose tolerance test advised by WHO was applied to all contributors. Result were evaluated according to the criteria of WHO and ADA distinctly. In 470 persons having BMI of more than 27 Kg/m2 according to WHO criteria; In 35 persons (%7.44) type 2 DM, in 88 persons (%18.72) IGT were found. According to ADA criteria; In 37 persons (%7.87) type 2 DM, in 86 persons (% 18.27) IGT,in 9 persons (%1.91) impaired fasting glucose (IFG) were found. In assessment of 440 persons having BMI than 27 Kg/m2 according to WHO criteria; In 10 persons (2.27%) type 2 DM, in 30 persons (6.81 %) IGT were found. According to ADA criteria in 10 persons (2.27%) type 2 DM, in 30 persons (6.81 %) IGT, in 6 persons (1.36%) IFG were found. Type 2 DM frequency is 3.27 times, IGT frequencies 2.74 times more seen in persons having BMI of more than 27 Kg/m2 in respect to persons having BMI of lees than 27 Kg/m2.

Özet

Obezler arasında diabet prevalansı obez olmayanlardan en az iki kat daha fazla görülmektedir. Biz bu çalışmamızda VKl 27 Kg/m2 'den büyük ve küçük olanlarda Tip 2 DM ve Bozulmuş Glukoz Toleransı (BGT) sıklığını araştırdık. Çalışmaya VKl >27 kg/m2 olan 470 kişi (170 erkek, 300 kadın, yaşları ortalama 46(11 yıl) ve VKl27 kg/m2 olan 470 kişiden WHO kriterine göre; 35 kişide (% 7.44) DM Tip 2, 88 kişide (% 18.72) BGT tespit edildi.
