Abstract

The breastfeeding process, seen as the most basic obligation of being a mother today, has appeared through different alternatives throughout history. While there are also different options such as feeding with bottle, or feeding directly from an animal's breast, wet nursing have become quite the most popular among these. Although it has been assumed that the tradition of the wet nursing appeared to provide feeding in case of the death of mother or the inadequate production of milk, it has been observed that upper class families also has used wet nursing for their comfort. In these examples, the wet nursing not only has been used for providing the need for milk, but also for baby care and guidance. In medieval Europe, it has been observed that the suckling for noble or wealthy mothers has been accepted as a shame, so that the babies of these families have been given to wet nurses as soon as they born.Such experiences are incompatible with motherhood discourse, which is now defined as being identical with nature and functioning as sacred in nature, and which expresses that all these characteristics are again possible with the motherhood given by nature. Then, do the wet nursing tradions as it has been documented in the history should be evaluated as discrete situations, or do the discourse of motherhood that cause us to perceive these examples as an anomaly, should be reconsidered? This study aims to discuss the main claims of modern maternal discourse, which has been increasingly influential since the 18th century, starting from the historical aspects of motherhood and the historical examples of maternal tradition.
