Relationships Between the Scores of ÖYS and ÖSS Administered in the Two-Stage System During the Entrance to University

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the relations between the scores of the Student Selection Examination (ÖSS) and the Student Placement Examination (ÖYS), which were administered to the students entering university at a nationwide level as two successive stages. The Student Placement Examination was abolished in 1999 and since then the Student Selection Examination has become a one stage tool to achieve the goals targetted by the two examinations. In this study the validity of the ÖSS was investigated taking the ÖYS as a criterion to determine the effect of this change in the examination system on the achievement of the goals of the student selection and placement process. In the study the ÖSS and ÖYS scores of 38769 candidates, who passed ÖYS, taking the ÖSS in 1998 are considered. A Simple Linear Regression Technique was used to determine the predictibility degree of ÖSS scores to ÖYS scores. At the end of the study, significant similarity was found between the scores of the numerical and verbal sections of ÖSS and the related tests of ÖYS. However, no significant evidence is found to prove that this similarity provides sufficient grounds to abolish the ÖYS.

Bu araştırmada, üniversiteye girişte iki aşamalı sınavda uygulanmış olan Öğrenci Seçme Sınavı (ÖSS) puanlan ile Öğrenci Yerleştirme Sınavı (ÖYS) puanlan arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir. 1999 yılından itibaren ÖYS kaldırılarak Öğrenci Seçme ve Yerleştirme Sınavının amaçlan sadece ÖSS ile gerçekleştirilmeye başlanmıştır. Bu araştırmada, ÖSS'nin geçerliği ÖYS ölçüt alınarak incelenmiş ve sınav sisteminde yapılan değişikliğin sınavın amacına hizmet etme derecesi belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırmada 1998 yılında ÖSS'ye giren adaylardan ÖYS'yi kazanan 38769 adayın ÖSS ve ÖYS puanlan kullanılmıştır. ÖSS puanlarının ÖYS alt test puanlannı ne derecede yordayabildiğini belirlemek amacıyla basit doğrusal regresyon tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonunda, ÖSS'nin sözel ve sayısal bölümleri ile ÖYS'nin bunlarla ilgili testleri arasında önemli ölçüde benzerlik bulunduğu görülmüş; ancak bu benzerliğin ÖYS'ye olan ihtiyacı tam olarak ortadan kaldırdığına ilişkin yeterli kanıt sağlanamamıştır.
