The use of the common European framework of reference for languages on developing the speaking skills

Abstract

The European Council has suggested the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and its implementation, the European Language Portfolio. The purpose of this study is to improve the speaking skills course at Gazi Education Faculty, Foreign Languages Teaching Department, Division of English Language Teaching. In the research, a program has been developed to offer a new method for the speaking skills. Then, a pre test, post test and a retention test that are at B2 level have been administered to the students. The results obtained after the implementation have been assessed statistically and ,05 significant level has been taken into account for all the statistical analyses. According to the results, the new program has been proved to be more effective than the traditional speaking skills program. Therefore, suggestions will be offered based on the results of the study.

Özet

Avrupa Konseyi, yabancı dil öğretenlere ve öğrenenlere yardımcı olmak amacıyla Diller İçin Avrupa Ortak Başvuru Metni (OBM) ve uygulaması niteliğindeki Avrupa Dil Gelişim Dosyası’nı önermektedir. Çalışma, Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi, Yabancı Diller Bölümü, İngilizce Öğretmenliği Programı’nda öğrenim gören birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin konuşma becerilerini geliştirmeye yöneliktir. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek için OBM’de belirtilen dil betimleyicileri doğrultusunda geliştirilen etkinliklerle bir ders programı uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada B2 dil düzeyi hedef alınarak öntest, sontest ve kalıcılık testleri öğrencilere uygulanmıştır. Uygulama sonucunda elde edilen veriler istatistiksel olarak değerlendirilmiş ve tüm istatistiksel çözümlemelerde ,05 anlamlılık düzeyi temel alınmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen bulgular sonucunda, OBM’ye göre hazırlanan konuşma becerisi dersi programının geleneksel yönteme göre daha başarılı olduğu saptanmış ve bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda önerilerde bulunmuştur..
