The Metaphorical Perceptions of the Public Library Administratorson the Term of Ideal Library

Abstract

The aim of this study, by comparing the metaphors created by the public library administrators on the ''ideal library'' term and in the context of their ''workplace library'', is to determine the existing and desired situation and to what extent the desired condition becomes real. For this aim, the survey was applied to the public library administrators in the total of 81 cities. The population of the study is 81 and 38 questionnaires replied are included in the scope of evaluation. That the library administrators developed mainly the ''cultural center'' metaphor in accordance with the ideal library term refers to the desire to highlight the cultural functions of libraries. Furthermore, it can be thought that the desired situation is achieved since the developed perception related to the existing situation can be mostly matched up with the ''cultural center'' metaphor.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye'deki halk kütüphaneleri yöneticilerinin "ideal kütüphane" kavramı ve "çalıştıkları kütüphane" bağlamında oluşturdukları metaforları karşılaştırarak var olan durum ile düşlenen durumu ve düşlenenin ne oranda gerçekleştiğini ortaya koymaktır. Bunun için toplam 81 ilde bulunan halk kütüphanesi yöneticilerine anket uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın evreni 81 olup yanıt alınan 38 anket değerlendirme kapsamına alınmıştır. Kütüphane yöneticilerinin ideal kütüphane kavramına ilişkin ağırlıklı olarak "kültür merkezi" metaforunu geliştirmiş olmaları, kütüphanelerin kültürel işlevlerinin öne çıkarılması arzusuna işaret etmektedir. Ayrıca mevcut duruma ilişkin geliştirilen algı ağırlıklı olarak "kültür merkezi" metaforu ile örtüştürülebildiği için düşlenen duruma yaklaşıldığı düşünülebilir
